Hi everyone! Is there a way to add alt text descriptions to images and embeds? (Sorry if it's in the documentation somewhere - I looked but couldn't find anything.)

You can use this syntax for images

Ooh wow that works great! Thank you.
Is there any way to set a size for the image as well when using that notation? If there isn't that's fine - it's the descriptions that are most important for me right now.

IIRC the size will be always set to width 100% and max-width to the actual image width if notated this way.

Ok, thank you - it's good to know that's what it's doing.
In that case it might be good to use the gallery feature I saw on @
Emanuel
's channel (I spotted that he'd liked your earlier reply, and was curious!), where it shows the images above the post, even the title, and then lets you click through to an expanded view, without putting them in the post itself.
Here's an example
.
How do I do that? I've installed the gallery app and tried various combinations but I can't seem to get it to work. Is there a way to include alt tags on photos displayed like this, as well?

From my experience, the gallery app is utterly broken and even messes with your stream. I actually had to uninstall it from my channel.
That is, maybe it has been fixed meanwhile.

AFAIK the gallery addon is enabled at zotum.net and if you have the gallery app installed for your channel it should just work... It will create a gallery view of the images at the beginning of a toplevel post or from attachments like for example from mastodon. It will do nothing in comments and to images that appear after some text. Image descriptions should also work in the gallery view.

That's perfect - I just tried putting the image at the top, using the syntax that includes the description, and it works really well. Thank you so much!

It seems to be working ok for me right now, and not breaking anything. It looks like it's working fine on the channel I linked, too. But if I run into any problems, I'll let you know 👍

I've been using the Gallery app quite a bit and so far the only issue I've run into is that with two images, once the aspect ratio exceeds a certain threshold, it gives up on trying to put them next to each other and just displays one of them instead. The width/height threshold where it stops working seems to be around 1.487.
There probably is a point where they'd be so shallow they'd look ridiculous, but if that's what it's trying to avoid I'm not sure it's set to the correct level right now. It's not that it's impossible to display the images - just looking at them you can see they could be displayed fine.
For now I'm working around it by manually adding cinema bars to the images affected (fortunately not many). Once I've got through some other things on my todo list I will look for the code and see if I can figure out what's going wrong.
That said, it fails quite elegantly - just showing one image instead and indicating that there are more to see, behind a "+1" icon in the bottom right corner.
